Essay 3:  Analyzing Images (Graphic Novel); A Group Project

For this assignment, select a single page from Blue is the Warmest Color and show how it develops a central theme (or, the relationship between themes) of that work in particularly interesting ways.  Your thesis should clearly articulate the theme(s) which you perceive at work on the page; the discussion that follows the introduction will illuminate how the page develops the theme(s), connecting each individual frame, and the page, to the work as a whole.

Treat each frame on your chosen page as its own individual painting by examining it using the Strategies for Understanding Visuals.  You will need to answer each of those questions for each frame and ultimately explain how each of these works together as a group to communicate one central idea/theme.

PURPOSE:   To argue your interpretation of the theme communicated by your chosen page.

AUDIENCE:  You are writing to a general audience that has also read the text and is familiar with its contents.

I will explain in class how to effectively and fairly share the workload for the project.

Note that the group will earn one grade for the one paper that you compose together, and each group member will earn individual points for their separate contributions.  This score is determined by your classmates in your group.

IMPORTANT:  GROUPS MEMBERS HAVE THE RIGHT TO FIRE ANYONE IN THE GROUP  AT ANYTIME THAT THEY FEEL IS NOT CONTRIBUTING TO MOVING THE PROJECT FORWARD.  THIS MUST BE BY MAJORITY VOTE.

IF SOMEONE IS FIRED FROM A GROUP, THEY FORFEIT THE INDIVIDUAL POINTS THAT THEY COULD HAVE EARNED HAD THEY SIMPLY COMPLETED THEIR SHARE OF THE WORK AND WILL BE REQUIRED TO COMPLETE THE PROJECT ON THEIR OWN.

Format

Your essay should have a title. It should also be typed, double spaced, with one-inch margins all around, Times New Roman Font, & 12 pt.  Your paper should be 3 FULL PAGES up to 4 FULL pages and have a works cited page.  Refer to OWL at Purdue for questions about MLA format and citations.
